"Deputies discovered marijuana in the house and obtained a search warrant with the assistance of the Winneshiek County Attorney's office. Later the same day, Smith and Helen Inez Taylor, 29, 2322 Ranch Road, were taken into custody and charged with possession with the intent to deliver a controlled substance (marijuana) and violation of the drug excise tax. As their investigation continued, deputies learned that the 17-year-old girl had been physically and sexually assaulted, leading to charges of first-degree kidnapping, second-degree sexual abuse and human trafficking being filed against Smith. Smith pleaded guilty to the sexual abuse and human trafficking charges in April. Last Tuesday, Smith was sentenced in Winneshiek County District Court to 25 years for second-degree sexual abuse, 25 years for human trafficking, five years for possession of a controlled substance and five years for violation of the drug excise tax on unlawful controlled substances. The sentences are to be served concurrently, and according to Winneshiek County Attorney Andy Van Der Maaten, Smith will serve a minimum of 17.5 years.
