SlaveryMap Data Usage Policy

1. What this covers

Any use of SlaveryMap case data: viewing or citing individual cases, using the embeddable live map on another site, or requesting broader data access. This does not cover Not For Sale's own trademarks or logo, which are governed separately.

2. Permitted use

SlaveryMap case data may be cited, screenshotted, referenced, or embedded for editorial, research, educational, or advocacy purposes, with attribution as described in Section 4.

3. Prohibited use

Users may not:

• Use SlaveryMap data, in original or manipulated form, in any way intended to identify, locate, harm, harass, or expose a specific survivor or any individual named or implied in a case.
• Attempt to combine SlaveryMap data with other sources (satellite imagery, property records, social media, or anything else) to determine a more precise location than the one SlaveryMap publishes.
• Scrape, crawl, or bulk-harvest SlaveryMap data by any means other than the provided embed tool or a granted data access request.
• Redistribute the underlying dataset, in full or in part, to a third party without a separate data access agreement.
• Present SlaveryMap data in a way that misrepresents Not For Sale's methodology or implies a level of precision, completeness, or scientific sampling the data doesn't have (see Section 6).

Violating any of the above is grounds for immediate revocation of access, at Not For Sale's discretion, with no dispute process, consistent with how case removal already works on the platform.

4. Attribution

Every use of SlaveryMap data, direct or manipulated, must include:

• Source, in a footnote, in-text citation, or directly on any visualization: "Source: SlaveryMap, a Not For Sale project (slaverymap.com)."
• A link back to the specific case or map view referenced, not just the SlaveryMap homepage.
• The date accessed. SlaveryMap is a living dataset, cases are added and reviewed continuously, so the access date tells a reader which snapshot they're looking at.
• What filters were applied, if any (case type, region, date range), when citing an aggregate or a visualization rather than a single case.

Example: "Reports of domestic servitude in Southeast Asia have risen since 2023, according to SlaveryMap, a Not For Sale project (slaverymap.com/map?type=domestic-servitude&region=sea), accessed September 17, 2026."

5. Bulk data access

All requests go through Not For Sale's contact form.

• Standard requests require a signed data access agreement before any data is released, specifying the permitted use, a time limit, and a prohibition on further redistribution.
• Verified journalists and academic researchers (press credentials or a current institutional affiliation) get an expedited track: a 3-business-day target for initial response, ahead of the standard queue.

6. Disclaimer

SlaveryMap reflects reported and reviewed cases. It is not an exhaustive or statistically representative sample of trafficking in any given area. The absence of a pin in a location does not mean trafficking does not occur there — it may mean it hasn't been reported, sourced, or reviewed yet. Anyone using SlaveryMap data for research or reporting should represent it as documented cases, not as a full census.

7. Not For Sale's rights

Not For Sale may update this policy at any time and may remove any published case, or restrict any user's access, at its discretion, for survivor safety or any other reason it determines appropriate. There is no appeal process for a case removal, consistent with the platform's existing moderation policy.
