According to an article in the Register-Guard, Mathias Rey DeVasier, 50, "'lived most of his life blameless,' serving in the U.S. Navy, leaving with an honorable discharge, and working for decades as a local steel fabricator until he was laid off last year." He contacted the victim over craigslist, believing she was 18 or 19 years old. After it became apparent of her age (14), he continued to engage in sex acts with her and facilitate her services to other clients. He also provided her with methamphetamine and invited her to come live in his house, which she did until rescued. DeVaiser reportedly drove her around to different clients and kept a part of her profits for "gas money", which is viewed by law enforcement as reimbursement money for rent.

The Register Guard reports that the Eugene Police Department searched DeVaiser's home, rescuing the girl and capturing the perpetrator. He was sentanced on August 8th, 2009 to 44 months in prison "for providing methamphetamine to and promoting the prostitution of a 14-year-old girl". DeVaiser pled guilty to felony counts of third degree sodomy, promoting prostitution, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, and two counts of unlawfully delivering the drug to a minor. He also must register as a sex-offender and serve three years of post-prison supervision upon his release.
The victim's mother contacted the police department on March 20th, 2009, which led a subsequent investigation of prostitution in the area. Police searched the home and found pornography and traces of methamphetamine.
The victim received treatment in a program for "high-risk youth with substance abuse issues", but it is apparent she did not receive any counseling or services regarding her past prostitution.
