Tija and his wife were tried in 2008 and pleaded guilty to criminal human trafficking and false imprisonment charges. Jury awarded the victim $768,000 in the case which is believed to be the first case adjudicated under the California Trafficking Victims Protection Act.

Response & intervention
Following her emancipation from the household by law enforcement, Yusuf was granted a T-Visa with the assistance of the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST), which then referred the matter to Bet Tzedek Legal Services for the civil action.
CAST has provided Yusuf with shelter, social services, and legal help. She now has a T-visa and has recently completed a nursing assistant program.

Trafficked victim notified an American acquaintance who contacted the FBI who then notified local law enforcement. The victim's case was eventually tried in the Los Angeles Superior Court.
