In 1999, Maude and Saintfort Paulin arranged for the 14-year old victim to come to Miami from Haiti to work in their home. From 1999 to June 2005, Maude Paulin, along with her mother Evelyn Theodore, forced the victim to work as a domestic servant in their home, cleaning, cooking, and doing yard work. The victim worked up to 15 hours a day, seven days a week. She was forced to work through psychological and physical force, and with threats of jail and deportation back to Haiti if she refused to work. She was not paid.

Response & intervention
In May 2008, Maude Paulin was sentenced to 87 months in prison and three years of supervised release, and Saintfort Paulin was sentenced to 18 months probation, with six months in-home confinement, in addition to a $500 fine. The two must pay $162,765 restitution to the victim. Maude's mother, Evelyn Theodore, was also found guilty of conspiring to violate civil rights and forcing the victim to work for them.
The victim escaped in June 2005, with the help of a family friend who had witnessed her condition. The case was investigated by the FBI, the Miami-Dade County Police, and ICE.
