In November 2008, federal prosecutors charged five people with sex trafficking. The victims included young girls as young as 14 who were smuggled from Mexico and forced into prostitution in various homes and brothels in Miami-Dade County and across South Florida. They were beaten and kept in “stash houses” where they were imprisoned until being shipped out to private homes.
