http://www.timeslive.co.za/local/article369559.ece A South African couple, Sayed and Chuchumporn, have been arrested after three Thai women fled their brothel on Umbilo Road in Durban. The women were recruited by Chuchumporn in Thailand and although they knew that they were being recruited to be prostitutes, the harsh treatment that they received at the brothel forced them to flee and seek the help of their embassy. The details of their story are unknown. Further investigation revealed that the couple was responsible for managing operations and activities at the said premises. The brothel was therefore identified as the central point for the unauthorized, illegal activities. There was an organized human trafficking structure where women were being sexually exploited.

Response & intervention
The state used racketeering laws related to sexual exploitation to convict them. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime welcomed the conviction. Sayed and Chuchumporn were convicted on 19 counts. In addition to racketeering, they were convicted for contravention of the Sexual Offences Act and Immigration Act and money laundering. Police confiscated R19,700 and have shut down the Umbilo road brothel. The duo was arrested in 2007 after the three Thai women fled and sought sanctuary at their embassy. The women fled the brothel and went to their embassy. They have since returned to Thailand.
