A 38 year old woman, a suspected manager of a New Delhi brothel where police recently rescued several underage girls, was charged in or about August 2011 with kidnapping, the kidnapping of minors, forced prostitution, rape and operating a brothel, New Delhi police officer Surinder Kaur told CNN reporters. The woman has been jailed under India's Immoral Traffic Prevention Act. Kaur said she could not release the woman's name but described her as an Indian citizen and a former prostitute herself. Under Indian law, prostitution is legal, but profiting from another person's prostitution is not. One of the girls rescued is 10 years old, said Triveni Acharya, the president of the Mumbai-based Rescue Foundation, an anti-trafficking group that tipped off police. Five of the nine girls taken from the brothel have been confirmed to be underage, and tests are pending on the remaining four, Kaur said. All are estimated to be 16 years of age or less. Three of the girls are Indian, and the remaining six are from Nepal - the source of a steady supply of sex slaves for the brothels of Delhi and Mumbai, many of whom are forced into prostitution by traffickers.

Investigators with International Justice Mission, a Washington-based aid group that fights human trafficking, had spotted “Chutki” (nickname for “little girl”), a young teen, while undercover looking for prostituted children. New York Times reporter Nicholas Kristof accompanied the I.J.M. investigator (who wanted to remain anonymous for his own safety) into the alleys of the Sonagachi red-light district one evening, slipped into the brothel, and climbed to the third floor. And there were Chutki and three other girls in a room, with a pimp hovering over them. The girls were offered to the investigators who demurred but said they’d return.

Ismail Ahmed Age: 32 from Nowagaon in Assam Babita Age: 25 Both of these individuals run an illegal placement agency, Ashok Chand. Ahmed was arrested on May 5 from Shakarpur, while he was allegedly trying to sell a minor girl for Rs 1.5 lakh to a decoy customer. During questioning, Ahmed told police that brokers and agents operating in Assam, West Bengal and areas near the Indo-Bangladesh border would send minors to Delhi with promises of a better life. Once here, they would be handed over to an illegal placement agency run by Babita. Seven minor girls and boys, employed as domestic helps, were rescued during the operation — conducted with the help of NGO Shakti Vahini. The traffickers followed two different modules. "Children between the ages of 11-15 were placed in domestic households. Those above 15, especially girls, were sold off in Delhi and Haryana. Girls brought from Bangladesh were promised jobs in modeling agencies. Extreme poverty often led their parents to accept the agents' propositions,'' said an officer. It was revealed that the children had no knowledge either any salary was being paid to them or being sent to their parents for the household work they performed. Most of them had no contact with their parents after coming to Delhi. "The agent was paid a sum of Rs 20,000 to 25,000 by Babita for each minor child. She in turn charged Rs 20,000 to 35,000 from the employer where the children were employed as an initial payment. Then an agreement of 11 months was drawn up with the employer for payment of monthly salary. The monthly salary that was paid was also misappropriated by Babita and it never reached their parents," Mr Chand said.

According to India Times, the owner of the SLG Brick Chamber, Neela Krishna Mohan Rao, procured workers, including whole familes, from a middleman, for "advances" ranging from 3,000 to 7,000 rupees. The laborers were made to work inside the brick chamber from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m, and during the rest of the day, to form bricks and dry them under the sun before placing them in the chamber to burn. According to the India Times, the workers were housed in small huts; many were sick and malnourished; and some had scars and other evidence of torture. The workers alleged they were tortured if they attempted to flee.

Anita eventually escaped from the brothel. She immediately found two police men who, after being paid, assisted her to the home of a Nepali boy she had met while in the brothel. She stayed with his family and later found out that Robert Mosier (IJM) had been contacted. After Mosier and the police raided the brothel, Anita led authorities through the building; giving specific information regarding her experiences.

Three Nepali women who were being allegedly trafficked to the Gulf have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh while they were headed to New Delhi to take a flight, police said. A fourth Nepali woman who was allegedly part of a human trafficking gang was also taken into custody Saturday evening from the Gorakhpur railway station. Gorakhpur district borders Nepal. Dilmaya, the trafficker, said all of them had relatives in Muscat and she was taking the women to get them jobs there.

Four people have been arrested in the case including three agents from West Bengal (Dildar Mohammed Younus Hussain (32), Sabina Mohammed Alam (25) and Shahanarabegum Gazi (23)) and the owner of the brothel (Gauri Kancha Tamang (37) who has three previous registered charges against her). The suspects lured the three minors to come to Pune from Bangladesh with the pretext of getting them a housekeeping job and marriage. The girls aged from 15 to 17.

the perpetrators were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department on 2/16/07. On May 3, 2010 the two men and one woman traffickers were sentenced to 10 years in prison for t he trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation of three minor girls. The girls who were 12, 14 and 16 years of age had been lured by the traffickers from their rural villages in Nepal and W. Bengal with the prospect of legitimate work in Kilkata. Instead they were sold to the traffickers who forced them into having sex with as many as 12 customers per day.

Sub contractors of the large multinational corporation GAP were discovered forcing children as young as 10 years old to work 16 hour days, making garments for the GAP Christmas sale. Children were rounded up in villages when the traffickers promised parents payment that would allow them to quit work in the fields if they would sell their sons to go to the city to work, where they would "receive educations and learn to become men." Children that cried or showed any sign of slowing down in their work were beaten with rubber pipes and had oily rags shoved in their mouths.
