The victim- a woman of foreign origin to Oman was employed in Muscat as a housemaid by a sponsor. The woman was then reportedly coerced by a man (accused 1) to “run away” from her sponsors, and come work for him as a prostitute as she would “receive more money”. After having sex with her, this man then sold her to a second man for RO 100 ($34 USD). The second man (accused 2) then earned a living from her, using her as a prostitute. He turned his home into a brothel and men would visit and pay him money to have sex with her. Response & intervention
After a tip from a neighbour/witness police arrested both men for crimes of owning a brothel and adultery, which is illegal in Oman. Public Prosecution transferred the men to the Criminal Court of Justice in Sur to be charged with human trafficking crimes. The two men were sentenced by the court to three years in jail and fined RO5,000 each for their involvement in human trafficking. The men also received an additional sentence of six months for adultery. On top of this the 2nd accused will also be punished with six months in jail and a RO50 fine for the crime of managing a brothel and will also have to pay a fine of RO400 for working in Oman illegally. Due to the cultural laws that exist in Oman, the female Victim in this case was not actually seen as seen as a victim, and was in fact sentenced to six months jail for the crime of prostitution. After her jail term she is to be deported.
