David Lee Walker Age: 29 Sentenced to 12 years in prison for Human Trafficking and other related charges - May 20, 2011 David Lee Walker, a pimp who operated in the metro Atlanta area, controlled at least five women, all between the ages of 20 and 24. They operated out of Rodeway Inn at Fulton Industrial Boulevard, south of the city. But one night, apparently, one of the girls decided she had had enough and wanted to leave. When Walker wasn't around, she fled to a nearby restaurant - The Varsity - to look for help. But Walker found out, and he ordered the other women he controlled to bring her back to their motel. Walker and the women beat the 21-year-old with a bottle until her eyes swelled shut and there was a hole in her head. Then, one of the women locked her in the dog cage and left her there overnight, with injuries untreated. Five people, including alleged pimp David Lee Walker, are charged with beating the woman until her eyes were swollen shut and she had a hole in her head from being hit with a bottle. The victim was then forced into a 3-by-5 foot dog cage and kept there overnight. Walker sent cell phone pictures of the caged woman to other pimps.

"Over the past three weeks City Press visited Maputo twice to infiltrate the syndicate. On our first visit the syndicate paraded six Chinese women (four had already been sold) and three Mozambican women for sale for between R5000 and R10000. When we returned last week only one Mozambican woman was still for sale. The others had already been brought to South Africa. The syndicate members said they could find more Mozambicans in a few days and that two Chinese women were arriving in the country that Saturday. We provided this information, with more details, to the police during a meeting with a top Home Affairs official. Three Chinese men and a Chinese woman were arrested at the airport on Saturday morning as they entered the country. A second woman was collected by a local man and they managed to evade the police. The four arrested are all allegedly linked to the trafficking syndicate. This week another Mozambican, a bank official, was also arrested for alleged links to the syndicate. All eight suspects are in custody and are being questioned."

Rubi Bertaud-Cabrera Age: 27 Charged with one count of importing an alien for an immoral purpose; two counts of bringing in and harboring aliens; one count of transporting for prostitution; and one count of failing to file a factual statement about an alien. Police are now looking for suspected human traffickers Efrain Bertaud-Cabrera, who is described as 5'5", 200 pounds, and about 30-40 years old, and Marcos Antonio Pacheco-Martinez, 5'9", 160 pounds and about 25-35 years old. Victim had been smuggled into this country illegally after Bertaud-Cabrera's mother in Mexico approached the victim's mother about traveling to the United States to care for Bertaud-Cabrara's children, the affidavit said. The offer was first extended when the victim was 16, but her mother resisted until four years later. The victim then traveled to Altar, Mexico, to meet someone who would smuggle her across the border. She paid the smuggler 1,200 pesos, or about $100, the affidavit said. She first was taken to a "stash house" in the Phoenix area for several days, then moved to Atlanta and ultimately to the house on Ginger Lane. She initially did housework there, but Bertaud-Cabrera then told her that she would have to work as a prostitute to pay off her smuggling fee, the affidavit said. The Victim escaped from her alleged abductors and was walking around the Pepperhill subdivision about 7 p.m., according to a police incident report. A woman in the neighborhood saw the victim and called police, said Spencer Pryor, police public information officer. “She looked like a child and she looked confused,” said the caller, a Smoketree Court resident, who asked that her name be withheld. “I didn’t stick around to hear what was wrong with her. I just called police and left.” Using a Spanish-speaking officer as an interpreter, the victim led police to a house on Ginger Lane where she said she had been held against her will for three weeks.

North Seattle, Washington, United States, 2010

"A man charged with kidnapping and promoting prostitution on Aurora Avenue North served two decades in prison for selling crack cocaine within 1,000 feet of Garfield High School. Additional police documents in the case against Derrick "Vamp" Hargress were released Tuesday. Hargress has pleaded not guilty to first-degree promoting prostitution and second-degree kidnapping. His next court date is Aug. 19. Hargress told a 21-year-old girl he allegedly forced himself upon that he was a Hoover Crip. When Hargress, now 48, pleaded guilty to selling crack and using a firearm while dealing, a federal judge said he would consider lowering his sentence if he wrote a letter warning Los Angeles Crips gang members of the risk of committing crimes in Seattle. "Crip members, wake up and learn from my experience (not the hard way!) that coming to Seattle to sell cocaine isn't wise at all," Hargress wrote in a two-page letter, according to a 1988 P-I story. But prosecutors questioned his sincerity and after Hargress' letter said he is "probably the most dangerous and the most dedicated to crime of the 26 'gang-related defendants' indicted thus far." From 1986 and 1988, Seattle saw an influx of gang members from Los Angeles who were paid more for crack cocaine here than in Los Angeles. Many were members of the Nine Deuce Hoover Crips, a name that comes from the intersection of 92nd and Hoover streets in L.A. A Seattle crack house busted in 1988 showed the graffiti tags of Hargress and other gang members who pleaded guilty to federal charges. Hoover Crips are still a problem in Seattle, but not to the extent seen in the late 1980s, according to police. Hargress was released from federal prison in 2008. Court documents show that year he was convicted of drug offenses, assault and had domestic violence assault convictions in 2009." -seattlepi.com www.seattlepi.com/local/424864_cop11.html?source=rss

CASTILBLANCO also must register as a sex offender. “Making money off the exploitation and misery of another human being, whether for commercial sex acts or forced labor, is human trafficking and nothing more than modern day slavery,” Vance said. “Prosecuting this type case is how we begin to address the criminal enterprise of human trafficking…” said U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance.

Omaha, Nebraska, United States, 2010

Four individuals ran a sex trafficking business out of their home property in Omaha, Nebraska. Merrideth Crane-Horton was described in court records as the "mastermind." Her husband, Edwin Horton, handled the money, while Ramon Heredia, Horton's nephew, provided the muscle. Katherine Heredia worked as a prostitute. The trafficked girls involved were under the age of eighteen, one girl was only thirteen years of age. Two girls, the thirteen year old and a fifteen year old, managed to escape. Girls harbored at this Omaha residence were beaten and threatened to perform sexual acts for pay with their earnings going directly to their traffickers. One woman, now 20, told authorities that Crane-Horton and Ramon Heredia beat her to coerce her into prostitution and to keep her from talking to police. The woman said Crane-Horton would lock her inside a room without heat or lights to compel her to perform sex acts. Katherine Heredia was also working as a co-conspirator as well as a prostitute. She claims to have been subject to violent beatings to “keep [the other girls] in line”. A local expert on human trafficking said it's not uncommon for a victim like Katherine Heredia to become a co-conspirator. "It is very similar to a domestic violence situation," said a member of the Omaha Salvation Army's social services division. "It is somewhat like Stockholm syndrome. After a period of brainwashing and breaking,' you co-opt with your abuser ... and bring into the fold younger people. It is a distorted idea of love."

Cui has in recent months posted job advertisements in Korean-language newspapers seeking nail salon attendants. But once the women responded, Cui threatened them, Spota said, at times saying that she would have them or their families killed by Chinese gangsters. Cui also threatened to abandon them penniless on Long Island or tell their families they were prostitutes if they refused to cooperate, Suffolk DA Spota said. As many as eight women, all in their 30s and 40s, serviced dozens of clients a day at a Huntington Station nail salon and an unnamed "spa" near the Hicksville train station. The women performed a variety of sexual services for as little as $60, officials said. Cui got the money, officials said, and the women kept tips. One Craigslist ad earlier this month promised erotic services. Raids at the businesses and Cui’s home, an 8,000-square-foot, Tudor-style house in Flushing, found $20,000 in cash, lingerie, shower massage tables, cases of condoms, baby oil and rubbing alcohol. "There was not a single bottle of nail polish found," said Suffolk police Detective John Rodriguez, who assisted in the investigation. Rodriguez said many of the women — only some of whom have agreed to cooperate in the case — did not speak English and were new to the country. "If you’re from a small village, you don’t know the language, it can be easy to intimidate someone like that," he said. Two Chinese women, a 40 year old businesswoman and her 38 year old colleague were tried and convicted of human trafficking crimes. It is believed that two others, including the son of the 40 year old, were also involved. They have been found to have forced the victims, two women and a man, to work at a massage parlour owned by the businesswoman, providing illegal massages and sexual services without getting paid under threat and confinement. One of the victims, a 32 year old Thai woman was picked up from the Dubai International Airport by the businesswoman and her son in February 2010. She was forced to provide sexual services in an apartment run as a massage parlour. She worked primarily for free as the massage centre owner threatened her that she would have to pay the expenses incurred for bringing her to the country and the accommodation. During the investigation, the businesswoman admitted that she seized the passports and visas of the victims upon their arrival. She was accused of taking advantage of the financial hardships of the victims to force them to obey her.
