A man who ran a ring of underage prostitutes in Kansas City and Overland Park received a sentence of almost 22 years in federal prison for child sex trafficking. But even though Randal G. Jennings, 43, had pleaded guilty to the single human trafficking count last year, the Chillicothe, Mo., man came close to getting another five years added to his sentence by minimizing his role as a pimp at the sentencing hearing. Addressing the judge, Jennings said he thought the girls were college-age students. He also said he placed their ads on Craigslist and another Internet site so they could meet clients in nice hotels, not on the rough streets. He also said prosecutors had overcharged his case. Jennings’ four working prostitutes were 16 or 17 years old when he was arrested in January 2009. Prosecutors also alleged that Jennings had tried to induce a 13-year-old girl to begin working for him, but she declined. In interviews with investigators, the girls said that they paid about 20 percent of their earnings to Jennings, who often drove them to their “dates.” Jennings also took photos of the girls with his cell phone camera and posted the images with their online ads. -------------------- Primary Source: http://www.justice.gov/usao/mow/news2010/jennings.sen.htm Secondary Source: http://www.kansascity.com/2010/10/06/2285309/man-gets-22-year-sentence-for.html

The girl was in bondage for three years before she escaped. She is now getting aftercare. No exact details were given about her escape. The Article: "I could not go back home, my grandmother told me never to come back. They sold the cows and got money," she added. Now 17, she escaped her tormented married life in July and found solace at Palmerton care centre, which has also become a home to 18 other teenage girls who escaped similar situations. They were rescued by welfare officials and police in a campaign to stem the practice, even though many communities see nothing wrong with it. Most of the girls say their abductions were pre-arranged with their parents and left them no say in the process. In many cases, girls are forced out of school and bear children, when they are barely out of puberty. "He raped me on our first night together. Every day he forced himself on me, in all the cases he overpowered me after a struggle," said Sinama, who now has a two-year-old boy by the man. "I love my child and I am going to raise him to be a good man." Captain Nomana Adonis from Mthontsasa police station, which leads a rescue campaign in villages around the area of Lusikisiki, said the abductions were a new phenomenon. "This is new. We believe there may be hundreds of other girls out there we did not reach," said Adonis. "We have encountered girls as young as 13 who were sold to old men, opening them to chances of contracting diseases like HIV." She said a number of "husbands" and parents had been arrested. "In most cases the husbands are charged with rape and abduction, but so far we have not secured a single conviction," said Adonis. Peter Mtuze, a retired academic and the former head of African Languages at Rhodes University, decried the unothordox revival of ukuthwalwa, saying it did not fit in the mordern world. "Children are literally being sold, almost to the highest bidder. This is paedophilia," said Mtuze. "In the old days men usually abducted women who were of marriage age, not minors. This is not culture," said Mtuze, adding that in the past, girls who were abducted were not raped. "The girl was kept safe until she accepted the love proposal from the man. Messengers were then sent to the parents of the girl to start lobola (dowry) talks," said Mtuze. He said the custom was practiced secretly by a number of tribes in African countries. Both the government of South Africa and the Human Rights Commission (HRC) have condemned the practice, saying it has no place in a modern society. "This custom is taking us backwards as a country. We are doing our best to stop it and protect the children," said Phearane Moreroa, head of HRC. Source-AFP TRI

she was trafficked by an older man who at first tried to "help" her and her two girlfriends find an apartment. He would take them out to expensive restaurants, bought them and their friends drinks and drugs. The girls thought of him as a a father figure. On one occasion after drinking and being slipped drugs all of the girls were very tired so he took them to a hotel where they could fall asleep. One of the girls remembered waking up and seeing the man raping her friend but was too tired and drugged to get up and do anything about it. When all three of the girls woke up the next morning they found their clothes on the floor with blood on them and 100 soles on the bed. After this, all three of the girls self esteem was gone. They spent the 100 soles on drugs and alcohol. The man bought the girls cell phones and shelter and would continually lure them in with affection and then continually beat them. He paid for a little room for the three of them to share that smelled of yearn and was located in a really bad area. He would allow the girls to have boyfriends from now and then , although most of these "boyfriends" were his friends and would also rape the three girls.

Derrick Avery, also known as "Pimp Snooky", ran a prostitution ring across multiple state boundaries for many years, starting as early as in 1997. He would entice girls into becoming prostitutes by bringing them gifts and jewelry. Once trafficked, girls were forced to have sex with men and sometimes rob them. If girls returned with fewer than $500 in a night, they would be beaten with pool cues, shoes, pots, broom handles, and belts, along with other forms of violence. His prostitutes were known to be as young as 14 years old. Many girls were also forced to cook and clean for him, essentially becoming domestic servants as well. He worked most prominently in Chicago, Las Vegas, and Milwaukee, but his operation expanded over eight states according to a federal criminal complaint.
