"The turning point for the victim came as she was studying criminal justice at John Jay College. Her tormentors were threatening to recruit one of her close family members and she could not let that happen, so she went to her professor, Jeff Kern, a former prosecutor. He carefully suggested that she speak to the authorities; he knew she was reluctant out of fear for her safety and that of her family." "Mr. Kern said he spoke several times on his own to the police and the district attorney’s office and helped her understand the criminal justice system to make her feel more comfortable to approach the authorities herself." sources: http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/06/29/sources-sex-trafficking-ring-broken-up-in-brooklyn-after-sex-slave-tips-off-authorities/ http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/01/nyregion/woman-in-brooklyn-rape-case-confided-in-professor.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=john%20jay%20prostitution&st=cse

They told me they had Chinese people in the van. It was a very suspicious vibe so I walk outside to sweep the parking lot. Another customer (a middle-aged black man) told the two white men to talk to me. They replied, "Oh no, and they left abruptly." What happened was, after they paid for they're gas and cigarettes, they had 3 young asian girls hop out the van, then one of the older white men, told two of them to get back in, while the other older white man paid the customer (the black man) 20$ to let the asian girl see how southern black men talk. He also asked the customer (the black man) if he knew any one willing to spend alot of money. I called the police and gave them the information I had written down. In 2006, Montgomery County Police identified the crime of human trafficking as an emerging issue of concern in the county. Vice and Intelligence officers in the Special Investigations Division took special training to focus on combating this crime, and have been in the forefront of investigating these crimes. In February there were three incidents where individuals who have committed crimes of human trafficking in Montgomery County, and in one incident throughout the Washington Metropolitan area, were arrested by Montgomery County Vice officers. On February 16, 2010, Rodney Hubert, age 34, of the 400 block of Vanderbilt Avenue in New York, was arrested and charged with the human trafficking of a juvenile for prostitution. This long-term investigation revealed that Rodney Hubert employed numerous individuals at his internet website design company in New York City who assisted in transporting a 15-year-old female from New York to Montgomery County, for the purpose of prostitution. The victim was recruited by the organization with the promise that she would travel to Maryland for a modeling photo shoot. Once in Maryland, the organization advertised the juvenile on Craigslist for prostitution. Also arrested were Christy Elmes, age 23, of the 3800 block of Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, New York; and Katherine Mateo, age 19, from the 200 block of Bethel Park Boulevard in the Bronx, New York. Also arrested in Georgia was Tomika Powell, age 21, of the 300 block of Geary Drive in Montgomery, Alabama; who was also wanted by the U.S. Army for desertion. All were charged with human trafficking, sexual abuse of a minor, and second-degree child abuse. On February 24, 2010, Deangelo A. Bynum, age 24, of the1000 block of 16th Street in northeast Washington, D.C., was arrested and charged for solicitation of a minor for prostitution. He attempted to recruit a 16-year-old female to work for him as an escort/prostitute. Bynum attempted to recruit the victim who he found on Facebook, through multiple telephone, e-mail, and text messages. Bynum insisted on photographs and a “finder fee” from the girl in order to work for him because she was considered “high risk” because of her age. Bynum was arrested after he traveled to Gaithersburg to meet the girl and collect his fee. On February 26, 2010, Arash Koraganie Ghulam Abbas, age 31, of the 17800 block of Cormorant Lane in Germantown, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of human trafficking. Abbas operated an internet escort service that was a front for prostitution and human trafficking. This organized crime business employed many women, recruited from internet social websites, and used extortion to force compliance. The business operated throughout Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. It generated thousands of dollars of tax- free income a week. This long-term investigation which began in October of 2009, also identified and arrested several individuals associated with the organization. Montgomery County Police received assistance in this investigation from Arlington County and Fairfax County Police. The sexual solicitation of a minor for prostitution and the human trafficking of a minor for the purposes for prostitution are felonies in the state of Maryland and also violate federal laws. The public is reminded that prostitution is a crime and the human trafficking of a minor for prostitution (anyone under 18 years) has even more serious criminal ramifications. In some cases, even if a suspect claims that he did not knowingly engage a minor in prostitution, simply the fact that the victim is under 18 years of age is all that is necessary to be prosecuted for human trafficking. The Maryland State Legislature is currently considering bills that would increase the penalties for human traffickers and seize the assets of organizations that engage in this illegal activity.

The human trafficking ring in question would charge Brazillian emigrants up to $15,000 for false documents and to be smuggled into the U.S. There, members of the gang would abduct the emigrants and demand ransom for them from their families. The U.S. Consulate reported, “They left from Brazil and went initially to Guatemala, from where J.C.'s coyotes (migrant smugglers) guided the clients across Mexico to the border with the United States border.” In some of the cases, migrants were abducted in Texas, and their families were asked for ransoms of up to $10,000. The abducted migrants were often tortured or threatened with mutiliation. Investigations began when J.C. was arrested on charges of forging passports in July 2010. Subsequently, twelve members of the gang were arrested. Ten of those arrests took place in Governador Valadares.

Most of the alleged victims come from a small town in Hungary called Papa, where it is alleged the accused have recruiters working for them. Once recruited the men are instructed to fly to Canada, claim refugee status and then apply for social assistance through Ontario Works, claimed Sgt. Kevin Serniuk, of the Hamilton-Niagara RCMP immigration and passport section. The men were then made to work on construction sites for free, never seeing a dollar of their social assistance money. They were isolated, fed scraps and lived in the basements of about five Hamilton homes belonging to their captors, one victim alleged. “They didn’t have the opportunity to communicate with a large population here in Hamilton, and you couple that with the fact that once they were in Canada they were never really left alone to mingle with the community . . . so their opportunity to communicate with somebody else was limited,” Serniuk alleged. There was one opportunity to communicate and that was at Ontario Works, were social service claimants must meet with staff on their own, he said. It was at Ontario Works that the first alleged victim told his story last December. This led to further alleged victims – some here for as long as a year, others a day, Serniuk said. at first 10 victims were identified, later 6 more and then yesterday 3 more totaling 19 but there may be more.
