Wun Hee Kang and Kyongja Kang, a married couple of South Korean origin who owned several nail salons on Long Island and a bar known as Renaissance in Queens, New York. In April 2003, Kyongja Kang traveled to South Korea to recruit young women to work at Renaissance. She allegedly promised them that they would be paid $40 per day, plus tips, and would not be required to have sexual relations with the customers while working at the bar. Two young women agreed to accompany Mrs. Kang back to New York, arriving on May 30, 2003. Upon arriving Mr. Kang met the cooperating witnesses when they arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport and drove the young women to a house in Flushing, Queens, where they were thereafter required to live. Mr. Kang also forced the women to surrender their passports and their return airline tickets. The women began work at Renaissance the next day, working 6 1/2 hour shifts for six days per week. The women were informed that they each owed the Kangs approximately $20,000 for various travel-related expenses, and were forced to sign promissory notes in the amount of $20,000. They were not permitted to keep their wages or tips while working at Renaissance; all of their income was taken by the Kangs and credited toward their "debt." The women were not permitted to leave the house in which they were staying without the Kangs' permission and were forced to borrow money from the Kangs when they wished to make any purchases outside the bar, thereby increasing their indebtedness. In November 2005, Wun Hee Kang and Kyongja Kang pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them. Kyongja Kang was sentenced to just over 10 years in federal prison Friday for her role in a human trafficking operation. She was also ordered to pay the two victims a total of $90,000 in restitution. As part of her plea bargain, Kang and her spouse are surrendering interest in two homes in Port Jefferson and the Renaissance Bar, as well as nail salons in Selden and Westhampton. Kang is also forfeiting $15,000 in cash and more than $50,000 in jewelry. Wun Hee Kang's sentence is unknown due to his involvement with another case involving the trafficking ring. After he was arrested, Mr. Kang admitted that he sent, Nisim Yushuvayev, an I.N.S. employee, to the Queens apartment to get one of the South Korean woman to leave the country so that she could not testify against him.

Social worker rescued girl, age ten. The article: Johannesburg - Lesotho-born Thato was brought to South Africa at age three, by a woman she knew simply as "granny". Five years later, her "granny" sold her into sexual slavery. The woman who bought her was running a sex ring that police are still investigating to find out how many children were involved. It's a scenario that South African authorities and child welfare campaigners are already working to prevent during the Soccerl World Cup next year, which authorities fear could draw in child traffickers hoping to cash in on the fanfare around the games. Thato, now 10, was rescued just three months ago by a social worker who brought her to Amazing Grace Children's Home, which houses 79 children outside Johannesburg. The home's founder Grace Mashaba, who explained Thato's story, said her parents probably had no idea that the "granny" would sell their daughter. "That 'granny' doesn't have children, so she keeps asking people, 'Can you give me your child so she can stay with me?' She has a good house, so people trust in her," Mashaba said. Thato at least was able to speak about her abuse. Another 10-year-old Lesotho girl rescued from the sex ring is too traumatised to talk, Mashaba said. An estimated 247 000 children in South Africa now work in exploitive labour, including prostitution, according to the Child Protection Action Plan for the World Cup, created by government's department of social development. Campaigners worry that the problem will grow with the influx of tourists next year, especially as South African schools will be closed during the World Cup, which runs from June 11 to July 11, meaning many children could be left unattended during the day. Families selling own children "Child trafficking is a big concern because of the big economic pull of the event," said Stephen Blight, the head of child protection in South Africa for the UN Children's Fund (Unicef). "All the fans and visitors spending money will create a whole network that criminal networks will want to benefit from." The government worries that child trafficking could increase as poor South Africans struggle for a slice of the $4bn the World Cup is expected to generate. Parliament is due to consider a trafficking law early next year, aiming to prevent children from getting recruited to beg or hawk souvenirs on the streets, or more worryingly forced into prostitution. Rebecca Pursell, a social worker for Kholisa Management Services, a child advocacy group, said the school holidays could add to the problem for children. "They will be loitering around without much activity, which places them at high risk not only of trafficking but of sexual exploitation," she said. In addition to cross-border trafficking from Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Lesotho, many poor South Africans will leave rural areas to look for work in the cities during the games, she said. Mariam Khokhar, of the UN's International Organisation for Migration, said prevention campaigns are already underway, including theatre programmes in rural areas to educate people about the danger of trafficking. "Criminal elements often tend to exploit such events, and there will be an increase in criminality which could possibly include trafficking," she told AFP. For Thato, she will live at the Amazing Grace home for now. Many of children stay at the home until they finish high school, Mashaba said. Most of them have been abandoned, orphaned or abused. Those who have been trafficked from other countries can be repatriated, but often choose to stay, Mashaba said. "Even their own families, they do sell those girls. It's the people that you know that traffic the children." - AFP

A recruiter from Million Express Manpower, a former labor contracting company out of Mount Olive, NC, lured 30 Thai men to work in Johnston County, North Carolina with a promise of earning $16,000 a year for 3 years. The recruiter charged a fee of $11,000 for each man to "secure" their job abroad. Once they arrived, the labor contractor confiscated their passports and visas. "After about a week living in a motel in Benson, they were moved to a small storage building in Dunn, behind the home of Seo Homsombath, a native of Laos who is president of Million Express." "Homsombath at first contained the men by telling them that, without passports, police would arrest them if they left the property. Later, he showed them a gun, according to both Asanok and the lawsuit. A relative or employee was always at the house to guard them, Asanok said."(Asanok is one of the Thai workers who sued Million Express) "Homsombath delivered food, but it often wasn't enough for all 30 men, Asanok said. They had no kitchen, so they cooked outside on a portable gas burner. By mid-October the farm work ran out, and Homsombath took the workers to New Orleans, the lawsuit says. They spent a few weeks in a condemned hotel, badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina, without electricity or clean water. During the day, the lawsuit says, they demolished parts of the hotel they lived in. Asanok said he spent his days tearing down walls and hauling piles of destroyed carpet out of the hotel." "The Thai workers, including Asanok, say they were never paid for their work in New Orleans. Some were so broke, the suit says, that they trapped and ate pigeons."
