Aflao, Ghana, Togo, 2008

The practice of ritual or customary servitude was outlawed in Ghana in 1998, but no one has ever been prosecuted under the law. Rather, the practical implementation of the law has fallen largely to NGO's who have facilitated the shrines in ending the practice. The NGO Every Child Ministries Ghana negotiated with the Sovigbenor shrine community and educated them as to the issues over a span of over a year, finally winning the approval of the shrine for the liberation of all 126 of its trokosi slaves on December 9, 2005. The liberation was a public event in which the shrine freed the slaves and agreed to end the practice of ritual servitude in that place. In this case a 79 year old woman was liberated who had been enslaved there since she was about one year old.

The Adzimu shrine priestess and owners admittedly practice a form of slavery commonly called trokosi, but called customary or ritual servitude by the Ghana government. It is a combination of sexual and labor slavery and somewhat akind to servile marriage, because the girls are thought to be married to the gods of the shrine and sex with the priest or elders of the shrine is considered sacred because his (their) genitals are devoted to the deities of the shrine. About 16 girls are believed to be in bondage within the confines of the shrine, with about 600 living outside the shrine in involuntary subservience to the shrine. This practice permits girls to live outside the shrine under certain strict conditions and controls, including payment of a very expensive sacrifice at the annual festival. Adzimu is a head shrine having jurisdiction over three others.

On March 24, 2008, the mother of a 14 year old girl contacted a parole agent, and accused the defendant of “the kidnapping, rape, and pimping of her daughter.” The girl was abducted at gunpoint at a bus stop on March 3. She was then forced with physical threats to prostitute herself over the span of two weeks. She was detained by police on March 17th under suspicion of prostitution. Sullivan was arrested on March 25th at the Bay Breeze Inn in Oakland. A parole search of the defendant’s vehicle provided a digital camera, laptop, a book about pimping, and a cell phone. It was later discovered that the items seized had child pornography on them, which included images and video of the victim. The victim, under the pressure of her mother provided information to the OPD and picked Sullivan out of a lineup.

Once the victims arrived in the U.S. they were told they had to work for Gouw for at least one year. Gouw then confiscated their passports, and kept the women monitored at all times (when they were at work or at the common house where they were kept when not working). Komala would identify women in Indonesia, and send Gouw their picture, as well as information about height, age, and weight. Komala, Gouw, and other associates then recruited the women to work in the U.S.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested 5 South King County residents on federal charges for conspiring to enslave a 16 year-old Afghan immigrant girl. Those arrested were: Mohammed Atahee, 37 Nasima Yousufi, 70 Mohammad Yousufi, 84 Nahid Yousufi, 29 Maruf Yousufi, 42 The teen was forced to cook, clean, and do laundry for Atahee and the Yousufis, a federal grand jury indictment says. During the same period, the Yousufis required her to perform all the household chores and care for their children at 28004 33rd Ave. S., Auburn. Nahid Yousufi threatened the girl, called "JVI" in court documents, with arrest and deportation if she failed to live with Atahee or work for the Yousufis. On January 26, 2008, Atahee raped the girl, court documents say. Prosecutors accuse Nasima Yousifi and Nahid Yousifi of causing a marriage to take place between the girl - then 13 in Afghanistan and Atahee, then 33, in the summer of 2005. Because the marriage was not recognized by U.S. authorities, Nasima Yousufi allegedly told U.S. Embassy officials in Pakistan that the girl was the biological daughter of Nasima - then 66 years old - in order to obtain a visa for her. If found guilty, the defendants face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Angus, Scotland, United Kingdom, 2008

United Kingdom GB

Complaints by seven workers in Angus led to the investigation. In Angus and elsewhere, investigators found more than 15 breaches of regulation in such as areas as transportation, accommodation and minimum wage requirements against Polish workers who were employed picking daffodils. After this investigation, Timberland Recruitment Ltd had their license revoked by the Gangmasters Licensing Authority (GLA), a UK agency which "regulates those who supply labour or use workers to provide services in agriculture, forestry, horticulture, shellfish gathering and food processing and packaging." (http://www.gla.gov.uk/index.asp?id=42) Among other things, the GLA found a letter to the workers stating that they may not leave before the end of the contract without paying a fine to the company, and including threats to their families at home should they not pay, that workers had had deductions from their wages for transportation, housing, and the use of the company's water-proof clothing in bad weather, that workers were regularly receiving below minimum wage, and that they lived in sub-standard, cramped conditions which exhibited fire and health hazards.
